Enrollment Procedure

Application Procedure:

• Application is invited from the intending candidates through the leading newspapers of the country.
• No application is acceptable unless it is made on the Institution’s prescribed form.
• Every year candidates are to apply afresh. Applications of the previous year will not be considered in the following year for the purpose of one’s candidature.

Application Forms:

Application forms are available for Tk. 650/- at the Admission Office, Shah Marine and Business Institute (SMBI). In order to receive application forms by mail, write to the Registrar of SMBI along with a bank draft or pay order for Tk. 650/- in favor of SMBI and with a self- addressed stamped envelope in the following address:

Application Package:

The complete application package must be submitted to the admission office of SMBI by the dates announced in each semester. A complete application package includes the following documents:
• Application form duly filled in.
• Copies of SSC and HSC or equivalent examination certificate/testimonials/mark sheets/transcripts and SSC registration card for programs.
• Original certificates/testimonials/mark sheets/transcripts and SSC registration card must be produced at the time
of submission of application for verification by the officer of SMBI in charge of admission.
• Date of Birth as evidenced by the school or college leaving certificate.
• Medical certificate of fitness from doctor.
• Eyesight test certificate from an eye specialist.
• Three passport size and four-stamp size color photographs.

Admission Criterias

Age Limit

Candidates must not be more than 22 Years of age on 1st September of the year of applications. The only date of birth recognized is what is recorded in the candidates H.S.C or equivalent examination certificate.

Educational Qualifications

HND in Nautical Science, in collaboration with South Tyneside College, UK.
• A pass in HSC or its equivalent examination with minimum CGPA of 3.50 (preferably minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and 55% in English). HND in Marine Engineering, in collaboration with South Tyneside College, UK.
• A pass in HSC or its equivalent examination with minimum CGPA of 3.50 (preferably minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and 55% in English). HND in Business Management, in collaboration with South Tyneside College, UK.
• A pass in HSC or its equivalent examination with minimum CGPA of 2.50. Students appearing/appeared in the H.S.C Examination during the year of entry may also provisionally apply but they will not be considered for final selection if they do the Interview Board the requisite provisional pass certificate along with the mark-sheets issued by the education board or the principal of the college concerned.

Physical, Eye-sight and Color Vision Fitness for Marine

• A candidate must be physically fit in all respects as per standards mentioned in FAQ which they must read carefully before filling in the application form.
• Candidates applying for Nautical Science must have a prefect eye sight and color vision.
• Candidates applying for Marine Engineering must also possess minimum prescribed standards of eye sight and color vision.
• Before submission of application, candidates are advised to get themselves medically checked up as per Annexure A and should apply only when their physical condition, eye sight and color vision conform to Institutions requirements.
• Rejection can take place in case of any other defect which the examining doctor/board feels will interfere with the individual’s efficiency as an Officer/Seaman of the Merchant Navy.
